Rule #1 of making a reservation. Consult SeatGuru.

File under "Somebody had to say it": Conventional wisdom holds that those seated in the rear are most likely to survive a crash.

When flying long distance I always go for an aisle seat. The convenience of just being able to get up and walk around at will outweigh the view normally.

Sit as far forward as possible (ideally First Class :) ). But be careful not to be sitting right next to the toilets. In addition to having lots of people always hanging around, on some flights/airlines the smell can be somewhat offputting.

You ought to pick the seat next to the most interesting person on the flight.

Within 7 rows of an emergency exit, preferably in the aisle seat. :)

Front of the plane or an emergency exit.

Doesn't everyone just pick the "hot seat"? ;)

onebag.com has always proved to be a good starting point. I've used it as a base list and added a couple of custom items over the years.
