I'm traveling to NYC for a weekend, and was wondering if I need to rent a car. It's my first time, so I want to hit as many landmarks as possible.

I don't mind subway, but I'm not sure if i want to use it at night (not even sure if it's open).

What should I chose between (subway and cab rides) vs. renting a car.

Thank you.

The short answer is probably not. It depends on where you are staying and what you want to see. If you are planning on only seeing and staying Manhattan then a car will not be helpful. The subway runs 24 hours a day and is quite safe. Some of the places it stops in are not.

Absolutely not if you are staying in Manhattan and don't have special requirements. Parking will at a minimum cost $10 at every place you go and normally be more like $25-$40 at tourist spots. Attempting to park in street parking will probably just be a frustration and waste of time.

For comparison, a taxi between most 2 points in Manhattan will be $10-$20 or less.

Use Hopstop for planning trips on the Subway (or bus). Unlimited Daily and weekly pass Metrocards are available at Subway stations.
