Looking for a good, inexpensive hotel in New York City, centrally located, with clean rooms.

You might never guess it, but The Hampton Inn, a block west of Times Square, is pretty darn nice for an inexpensive New York hotel. |

I would have upvoted the Pod hotel (http://www.thepodhotel.com/) but I don't have any reputation. I stayed their and was amazed at how nice & clean the shared washrooms were. They also have a nice light system to let you know which washrooms are available/occupied. The room had an radio/iPod player and everything I needed. After all, it's not like I was staying in the room, I was either working or checking out the city. |

When I moved to New York I stayed in Milford Plaza at Times Square before I was able to find an apartment. I was able to score $64/night off hotels.com during the week. < $200 on the weekend. One block away from Time Square |

We managed to get The Avalon on East 32nd for under $100/night for a spacious junior suite through one of the travel search sites (I forget which, probably Expedia) a while ago. |

The Chelsea Savoy is nice and quite close to Penn Station. |

When I traveled to New York, 5 years ago, I stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Pennsylvania, which is on 7th Avenue across from the Madison Square Garden. The prices were quite low, and the hotel was pleasant and clean. |

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Metro. It's got a great location in Manhattan near a Subway stop, was very clean, very reasonably priced, and had a good continental breakfast, and free wifi. |

Here is a list of many of the less expensive hotels in New York City: If you open the map view, you can also see the location/price at the same time, since the hotels are in ascending numerical order according to price. |
